Floriography: The Language of Flowers
Words are so vast yet to understand is to feel overwhelmed. What are the right words to say? It's a truly good question to consider in this world of humanity and emotion.
I do not understand words of affection. One tells me “I care for you” and it sounds taboo! The lips uttering words of simplicity but confusion runs the course of my mind like a whirlwind. It's stress inducing. I cannot grasp society's way of speaking.
Languages exist all around the world. Some well known, some similar. Languages don't stop at English, Spanish and French, however. A language dedicated to the talk of flowers truly fascinates me.
Talking Petals
Floriography is the symbolic language of flowers, different blooms having different secret messages and emotions to convey. It's an art of gift-giving and receiving. Someone so sincere giving you a bouquet of roses, what could it mean? imply a ‘congratulations’ would be painfully boring, wouldn't it?
A friend giving you Gardenias as a gift of gratitude. In our flower dictionary one says Gardenias are the way of saying ‘I care for you’, but the secret meaning has a deeper and more intimate saying. The secret of love. Such a language is hard to decipher as much as the common saying of “I don't know”.
Mysteries of the Tongue
So what's the point? For the language of flowers to be preferred but it's still riddled with mystery… It's a simple answer, really. I just think flowers are pretty.
Act on it, not just speak on it. Saying how much you care for a person can be meaningful, but to me, I would second guess it as a natural cause of fear and distrust. But saying ‘I care for you’ with a hand of roses will make me start to question you! Haha!
There is no getting through me or many people, but think about giving a bouquet filled with carnations, mums, and hydrangeas? One doesn't need the meaning at times, some people just appreciate the colorful flora that grows from this very Earth.
Sex in the Garden: Plant Sexuality
Did you know flowers are capable of reproduction? Sexual and Asexual? Despite the extensive research of plant reproduction, the whisper of pollination, ovule, stigma, or pistil is enough to make the nearby flora blush.
Sex is an openly based term used to describe gender, a noun, and an act. The psychology and physiology of the term is something vast and complex. The intimacy between humans and flora- truly a beautiful topic to unveil.
Humans are complex beings who are the destroyers of themselves. We are the concept of destruction. We are terrifying creatures. That is what makes many of our traits beautiful.
The mind and complexity of us when it comes to intimacy are perceived in many ways. My fascination with the topic is almost perverted, I am not scared to say! Connections with a ‘heaty’ topic and flowers is right up my alley!.
The Sexuality of Organisims
What makes up sexuality in organisms? Between flowers and humans, we are strikingly similar. The parts of flowers are categorized as ‘male’ and ‘female’, and concepts of ‘sex’ and ‘gender’. But such organisms don't show a gender. Flora is often used for femininity, but flowers can be biologically male, so what makes of that stigma?
I never believed in gender roles and societal standards. We are all human, and our parts don't define us, it's our souls. Concepts of ‘gender’ and ‘sexuality’ are out the window!
My concept of labels is a spectrum. I don't associate with them, only when it's truly convenient for others. Labels are only things made by us to try and pinpoint a complex feeling. I, for one, support the use of labels, but personally, stray away from them unless used for simple clarification.
Yes… I am a ‘nonbinary lesbian’, but to me? I am a being whose soul caters to a girl, ‘looks’ like a girl, and is attracted to the androgynous flexible femininity of others. So like in short im a lesbo whos totally into butches and dykes or whatever..
Intimacy and Sex are a perverted topic I seem to Like a Lot.
Flora are all androgynous. They all look different, but are the same. That is the same with us humans. Our reproduction, our gender, our beauty, is all similar to our akin of the green world. It's truly beautiful in my eyes. It truly is ‘just a label’.
Intimacy is something important. Its shapes and forms are vast, but the concept of sex and sexual intimacy should be done in a way where it's truthful. Scandalous is the act, but the meaning behind it can be so pure. The utmost trust with someone to share a side with you that is private is something alluring to think about.
Complexities can be explained but not fully understood. I don't have the answers to your sex-life troubles, but I have the pervert in me to talk about flower sex and androgyny in an innocent way.
Lycoris Radiata
Amaryllis Radiata, Spider-Lily, Red Magic Lily, Corpse Flower, Equinox Flower
My Love Confession

The Lycoris Radiata is one of my favorite flowers, if not that, my favorite flower ever. The beauty of an organism whose meaning resides in the afterlife fascinates me beyond my mind. I'm deathly attracted to its beauty, which almost seems forbidden due to its hellish nature.
My fascination has existed since I was young. The introduction of the flora is unknown to me, as my love for it has existed for so long. The introduction could hint at the use it has in anime.
Anime commonly mentions this beauty. One of my favorite uses of its symbolism is the association it has with Homura Akemi from Madoka Magica. A character I relate to and find comfort in. The comparison to the two brings me joy, the perfect blend of just what I like and adore.
If I were to pick a flower I associate with, it would be the Lycoris Radiata. From my adoration of arachnids and lilies, it's honestly the perfect fit for me. The beautiful nature yet dark symbolism of this flower gives it a ‘not what it seems’.
In my eyes, such a beauty is misunderstood! The deathly traits and meaning behind it is something I forgive, I only see its beauty as it is, through and through. Give me a bouquet of my precious, and I MIGHT allow you marriage!
But my true love will forever reside in the Lycoris Radiata, my muse, my mutual, my confession of love and acceptance, if you will.
Meaning
The Lycoris Radiata is a powerful symbol in Japanese culture. The association with death and the afterlife gives it major significance, the reminder of life's fleeting nature and the importance of honoring loved ones who passed.
They can also represent impermanence, transition and the changing of seasons.
Origin
Originally from China, Japan, Korea and Nepal. Spread to the United States. Flowers in the late summer or autumn from heavy rainfall. Hurricane Lily refers to that characteristic, as well as Resurrection Lily. Naturalized in the Seychelles and Ryukyu Islands.
Cultivation
Should be stored in a dry environment between 7-13 C (45-55 F). They are ideally planted during spring, well-drained soil. 20cm (8in) deep and 15-30 cm (6-12 in) apart. Can be placed in pots with ample sunlight. Once planted, the bulbs are best left undisturbed.
Toxicity
All members of the genus Lycoris are poisonous. The bulbs produce the toxic alkaloid lycorine. If ingested, bulbs can cause diarrhea, vomiting, convulsions, and in severe cases, even death.
Herbal
Lycoris Raidata contains the alkaloid galantamine, which has been approved by USDA for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It's cultivated in China for the best extraction.
The FDA-Approved medication containing its galantamine is a safe and purified version of the drug, it's not the same as consuming the raw, toxic plant material.
Trivia
“Red spider lilies are sometimes referred to as magic lilies because It is said that the radiant red flowers appear to bloom "magically" from their unremarkably bare stalks.”
Gardenia
Cape Jasmine, Cape Jessamine, Garden Augusta, Gardenia Grandiflora, Gardenia Florida
Exciting Obscurity

Gardenias are the surface of care, and the inside of secret romance. The scandalous nature of gifting someone Gardenias and their impression being the more common known meaning of the flora is exciting~
Truly a force to be reckoned with, and a whole lot of miscommunication if you are a flora-expert such as I!- say if someone gifted this to me I wouldn't know if i've been confessed to or simply given an appreciation!
With humor aside, the nature of this flower holds meaning: love. Love is a powerful thing that comes in many shapes and forms, something that thrives in humanity like an infestation.
I think this flora and its meaning is strong, respectable, and admirable. Though its secrets in meaning are one to ponder on- or maybe even have the confidence to ask- it doesn't change the utmost care the giver has for you.
…To entertain the idea even more, however, I think the ‘forbidden love’ aspect of this flower can be strong. A secret love that cannot be shared has room for love that is forsaken, a love so strong but hushed away behind closed desperate lips~. Truly a bittersweet feeling it could evoke, the desperation but intense obscurity of one's true feelings. Scandalous!
Meaning
Secret Love. Handing someone a bouquet of Gardenias can tell them your true feelings, however, the meaning is commonly unknown. This kind of love can be secret in many ways, rather it's hidden or a fleeting fact.
These flowers can be given casually as well to loved ones as a way to say "I'm thinking of you”, or a way to say “I care for you”. They can also symbolize purity, refinement, innocence, harmony and gentleness. They are good flowers for celebration of new beginnings.
Origin
A genus of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Madagascar, Pacific Islands, and Australia.
Cultivation
This species can be difficult to grow due to its warm humid tropical origin. High humidity, bright (but not direct) light is required. Flourishes in acidic soils with good drainage. It thrives on temperatures of 20-23 C (68-73 F) during the day and 15-16 C (59-51 F) in the evening. Potting soils for gardenias are available. If water splashes on gardenias leaves or flowers, it can cause them to grow brown. To water thoroughly, keep the soil moist but not soggy.
Toxicity
Gardenias are toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if ingested, causing mild gastrointestinal issues. While they are not dangerous to handle, it's best to keep them away from pets.
Herbal
Frequently used herb in Chinese medicine. It has a bitter taste and a strong cold nature. It helps regulate heat in the body, along with irritability, urination, insomnia, and tightness of chest. In some African cultures, the roots can be used to treat skin issues like leprosy.
Trivia
“Its function in Chinese culture is to “drain fire”, clear heat and calm the heart.”
Salvia

Flower Trip and Distrust

I'm thinking of you. The sentence is powerful, it holds so much meaning but little said. It can be ambiguous, unknowing, and sweet. To receive a Salvia of the fine purple-bluish color is lovely.
…So lovely it's almost hypnotizing. Such a plant can be hypnotizing to the point psychological warfare is done to the brain. Is it to that intensity? Only one way to find out, surely? This isn't a recommendation.
The words 'I'm thinking of you’, or to be told how you are in someone's thoughts can vary for me. Oftentimes I wonder if I truly reside in someone's headspace. Do I appear in your mind the way you do in mine? Impossible. I cannot be perceived!
If someone were to give me blue/purple Salvias as a heart-warming gift then I'm sure I will be more accepting of your whisper to tell me who is in your thoughts.
Meaning
Salvia comes from “Salveo”, the latin word meaning to heal or to save. This flora often symbolizes wisdom, health, longevity, and healing. In floriography, the blue salvia means “I think of you”. The meaning can vary depending on the color.
Origin
Salvia has a large family coming from diverse origins. This includes the Mediterranean regions, China, the southwestern US and Mexico.
Cultivation
Plant them in full sun and well draining soil, ideally with organic matter like compost. Water regularly especially when it's the dry season, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Consider a thick layer of mulch for winter climates to protect them.
Toxicity
The toxicity varies through the variety of Salvia. It is considered non-toxic to humans, but some can still contain a bit of toxins.
Ornamental salvia may contain toxins if congested. Salvia divinorum is a specific variety that possesses hallucinogenic properties when steeped as tea, chewed or smoked. This isn't a recommendation.
Herbal
Salvia has a vast use for herbal medicine. The most well-known use is of the common sage, which treats digestive problems, memory issues, excessive sweating, and sore throats.
The Salvia Divinorum contains psychoactive compound salvinorin A, which induces hallucinogenic and dissociative effects when its leaves are smoked, chewed, or steeped in a tea. The effects are temporary. It is equivalent to a 20 minute acid trip. This isn't a recommendation..
Trivia
“Salvia is a large genus of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae, commonly known as sage. It includes both well-known culinary herbs and powerful hallucinogenic species.”
Hydrangea
Hortensia, Mophead, Lacecap
The Display

Such beauty makes me think about what the flora world thinks of it. Its large shape with few seeds, its changing colors and beautiful look… Like a ball of beauty sitting perfectly on its thin stem- its enough to make the ladies turn their heads in a huff!
So what is the message you’re trying to give? Its many looks and colors hide a meaning that can't be deciphered, yet they are everywhere, their beauty being displayed for everyone to see. Who is truly watching? It makes you ponder if the flora has time to bloom into something they like…
Perish the thought! The perfect lady-like Hydrangea is demure and lovely just as she says!
Meaning
Many colors of the Hydrangea mean different things; a mix of heartfelt emotions include abundance, gratitude, and heartfelt emotions. For example, blue hydrangeas symbolize apology and regret, pink hydrangeas often represent love and sincerity. Historically in the Victorian era, Hydrangeas could also mean boastfulness and vanity due to their abundance of blooms but few seeds.
Origin
Primarily in East Asia and the Americas. They were cultivated for centuries in Asia before being introduced to Europe.
Cultivation
Moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Grows best on slightly acidic soil. Space plants 3 to 6 feet apart. Partial sun, water them deeply about once a week when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Toxicity
These flora are toxic when ingested. They contain a cyanogenic glycoside called amygdalin, which causes ingestion problems. Avoid consuming these and keeping them away from children and pets.
Herbal
Hydrangea root is a supplement made from various plants of the flower, it is used to treat urinary tract infections and stones.
Trivia
“Their blooms change color based on soil pH”

Flower Blog
This is my blog dedicated to me documenting my journey with my flora! Im a beginner, so mistakes will be made along the way, as well as new entires and friends to introduce to you all.
Ms Begonia
This beauty is my first owned flower... ever, I think! Ive owned plants before, plenty of cacti, a lemon plant, and most likely plants I cannot remember. My mama is the plant lover while im the flower lover!
Here will be my journey documenting about Ms Begonia, showing my successes and troubles to hopefully learn and teach others.

10/8/25: The Bald Stage.
Yeah so she's literally dying. Okay but put the torches and forks down- because I promise you it wasn't my intention.
Because this is my first flower in such a long long time, I am inexperienced. When you buy a plant you must have enough money for it!!! If I had gotten her this new pot sooner I swear she would be doing better… It's fine… New blooms are coming in. I feel so bad. I cleaned her up and took care of the dead leaves and blooms. I had water her and put her near the window with Jeremy.
I went on a journey and looked through my tiktoks from middle school. I found one of my vlogs where I would talk about the plant I was growing, a type of flower I couldn't catch the name of. The famous La’Lori! I never forgot about her! I had a cactus at the time as well named Misha; safe to say I will always have the flower and cactus combo.
Well I am sure Ms Begonia will have new blooms. I will make it a safe space for her and make her grow healthily! Well, ill try my best…

9/30/25: Poor Thing.
I got my precious baby September 24th, 2025. Safe to say Home Depot fucked her up!!! The first thing I noticed upon examining the begonias is the amount of brown petals and leaves I saw. I was very picky, as I want to start out as healthy as I can to be a good flower mom, but even so, my poor girl was drooping and losing blossoms as I took her to the counter.. It's okay because I am determined to fix her up!
I have learned that Begonias are in season late spring to fall. I live in hot ass Florida, so I am cautious about their sunlight. Their browning petals have worried me, and upon further research I learned it's because of their petals and leaves being sensitive to water. When getting Ms Begonia I noticed they had watered her leaves and petals instead of her soil, since Home Depot's way of watering plants is a spray hose all over the flora and plants.
This explains why so many of the Begonias were browning… So after learning this information I made sure to water the soil.. But.. there was an issue. The pot is too damn small to even reach the soil!!!
Not only did they water her poor leaves and petals they put her in a small ass pot where she cant even drink properly! Now she's losing blossoms by the slightest movements… I was lost, so I asked my plant Mama. She told me watering her from the bottom by putting her in a bowl can help.
Now I researched how the top soil needs to be watered, however, this is our best method for now until I get money to have a new pot for her. I am determined to make her blossom comfortably into a beautiful young lady :3
